- The shells of the swimming pools need to be waterproof and should have no cracks or other defects. If there are cracks you may end up loosing a lot of water, which is not good given our present water restrictions.
- There is some concern with older swimming pools with regard to the skimmer boxes - which are part of the filtration systems. Skimmer boxes have been responsible for some serious injuries. If a person can sit in the box, or there appears to be some damage to it, you should replace it before using your pool.
- If you buy a house with an existing swimming pool, make sure you check the pool fence before you take the plunge. Check that the pool fence is robust.
- shake or use moderate force to check that the fence won't come apart.
- do the gates still close properly?
- has the fence ever been recalled?
Check the Planning SA website for details about requirements for swimming pools in South Australia, and make sure you contact your local council for regulations that apply in your area.
For your own safety and that of your family and friends it is important to make these checks.
