OCBA - Monkey bikes

Monkey bikes that do not meet safety requirements have been banned from sale. The monkey bike, or pocket rocket, is a miniature version of a motorcycle, powered by a petrol motor. Some are capable of speeds in excess of 70km/h.

Particular areas of concern are:

The throttle sticking, preventing deceleration
The brakes not being fitted properly and not providing sufficient stopping force
Steering mechanisms exhibiting free play causing shaking and loss of control
Foot pegs not being capable of supporting the rider's weight
No engine kill switch or not located in an easily accessible area.

Consumers who purchased a monkey bike before 15 May 2006 should get their bike checked by a qualified mechanic. If a bike was unsafe to ride at the time it was sold, consumers can approach suppliers to repair the defect or give a refund.

Consumers who are considering buying a monkey bike should ask the trader to give them evidence in writing that the bike has been checked and is not banned.
