This banning order only applies to candles with a wick or wicks that contain any trace of lead. The lead cores are used to assist in keeping the cloth wicks upright during the moulding process. When the banned candles are burning, a significant proportion of lead becomes airborne. Exposure to these fumes can constitute a serious hazard.The Office of Consumer and Business Affairs regularly monitors products that are available for sale in South Australia.
