This banning order only applies to candles with a wick or wicks that contain any trace of lead. Banned on 23 September 1999.This banning order only applies to candles with a wick or wicks that contain any trace of lead. The lead cores are used to assist in keeping the cloth wicks upright during the moulding process. When the banned candles are burning, a significant proportion of lead becomes airborne. Exposure to these fumes can constitute a serious hazard.
