Out of Credit
The National Indigenous Consumer Strategy (NICS) working group commissioned a film and song entitled Out of Credit, targeting young Indigenous consumers about the perils associated with mobile phone contracts. The film is a resource that can be used in association with other educational materials concerning financial literacy and consumer related topics. New payment rules for the construction industry
The Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2009 provides a new scheme to improve rights to payment in the building and construction industry. It is due to commence operation on 10 December 2011. You can read the new laws at www.legislation.sa.gov.au. Click here for more information.


Travelling con men
Each year, fair trading agencies across the country receive hundreds of reports about travelling con men ripping off consumers with cheap and dodgy home repairs. A new national strategy against travelling con men has been launched. Information from a national hotline will be fed directly to the taskforce for analysis and follow-up. So if you suspect that a tradesperson might be dodgy, then report them using the Report travelling con men form or ring the hotline: 1300 133 408. Savvy Seniors is the new consumer rights publication specifically for older South Australians. It has information about the Australian Consumer Law, about refund rights, guarantees, door-to-door sales, scams, ID fraud and much more.
