From time to time Consumer and Business Services releases discussion papers about major changes to the law or about consumer protection initiatives for public comment. These papers will be open for comment until an end date, as specified, after which they will be moved into the Archived Discussion Papers section of the website.

Debt Collection Harmonisation Regulation options paper

Consumer Affairs Victoria is inviting you to comment on options to harmonise debt collection across Australia.

The regulatory for debt collection and the options are outlined in the Debt Collection Harmonisation options paper (PDF, 671KB).

This is in light of the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs' objectives to develop:
• an understanding of the new model for credit regulation and what it means for debt collection regulation by December 2011
• consistent regulation for debt collection, taking into account new models for credit and the National Occupational Licensing System by December 2012.

These objectives include reducing consumer detriment and resolving jurisdictional inconsistencies within the existing legislative framework.

Consultation process

Consultation on this options paper closes at 5:00 pm, Friday, 9 December 2011.

All submissions will be considered and, if appropriate, included in measures to deal with consumer detriment and jurisdictional inconsistencies.
