Operating as a co-operative

The Co-operatives Act 1997 (the Act) incorporates provisions that are consistent with the co-operatives legislation of other participating jurisdictions to facilitate interstate trading and fundraising by co-operatives.

It provides for the incorporation and regulation of co-operatives and aims to promote co-operative principles of member ownership, control, and economic participation.

This document provides a summary of the main provisions of the Act. It should not be relied upon as a substitute for detailed consideration of the legislation.
