Grey imports

Grey import vehicles are new or used motor vehicles and motorcycles legally imported from another country through channels other than the maker's official distribution system. The term 'parallel import' is sometimes substituted.

A vehicle may only be imported to Australia as a Grey import once approval has been granted under one of the federally-managed vehicle import schemes, such as the Special and Enthusiast Vehicles Scheme (SEVS). Typically, a vehicle model is not eligible for import unless it satisfies strict criteria regarding its performance or specialisation.

From time to time, small batches of new vehicles are imported as Grey imports by individuals or commercial enterprises, when the local distributor for the vehicle manufacturer has chosen not to apply to the federal regulator to sell the model locally.

All imported vehicles must be inspected and complied to meet national roadworthiness standards before they may be registered in any state or territory.
