Total cost
Remember that dealer delivery charges and compulsory charges such as stamp duty and registration fees may not be included in the advertised price of the car. These charges can increase the final cost of the car substantially, so make sure you take them into consideration when working out what you can afford. However, if a new car is advertised at ‘drive-away' or ‘on the road' price, compulsory charges should be included.

Clarify what is included with the dealer before you sign the contract.

Some sellers put a considerable mark-up on accessories such as tinting and rust proofing, so check around to compare prices before you buy them.

Trade-ins
Trading in your current car removes the hassle of selling your car privately, but in most cases you will get less money for the vehicle than if you were to sell it privately. On the other hand, be wary of high trade-in offers as the price of your new car may be increased to cover the difference.

If you do decide to trade-in, always keep your old car until the new one is ready for delivery.
