Window tinting

Having your car windows tinted can be a road safety hazard if the tint is too dark.

Under the Road Traffic Act the driver's windscreen must have at least 75% light transmittance, while the front passenger's side windows must have at least 70% and all windows behind the driver must have at least 35% light transmittance.

There is an Australian Design Rule in place that sets out these limits but many consumers and traders who carry out the tinting work choose to ignore the rule.

Modifying your car to cut out glare or just ‘hot-it-up' should never be done at the expense of your safety on the road and all consumers and traders should make sure they adhere to the proper standard.

Tinting windows that are already lightly tinted during the manufacturing process can take the windows below the light transmittance standard. Sometimes you may not realise how dark the tinting is going to turn out.

Under fair trading laws the tinting must be ‘fit for purpose' if the vehicle is to be classed as roadworthy. So, before proceeding with a quote to tint car windows you should ask the trader for an assurance that the alterations will be in line with road safety rules.
