Travel

Before you take the big step of organising a trip within Australia or overseas there are a few things you should know.

Travel agents
The Travel Agents Act 1986, requires those who carry on business as a Travel Agent to hold a licence. The Act considers someone to be carrying on the business as a Travel Agent if they sell or arrange for the sale of:

To check if a Travel Agent is licensed, check the Licensing Public Register. Licensing is there to protect you so make sure you use a licensed travel agent.

Insurance
It is advisable to obtain appropriate travel insurance when booking your travel. This should cover you for such things as cancellations, lost luggage, stolen travel documents and personal liability. Check on your level of cover as it may also depend on where you travel.

Travel insurance should cover medical expenses incurred during overseas travel, however Medicare normally covers domestic travel. You should always consult a doctor (for appropriate vaccinations) before travelling overseas.

Warnings
The Department of Foreign Affairs offer travel advice on specific issues or events that may affect overseas travel. It is advisable to check with that Department to see if there are any warnings for the destinations you intend to travel.

Ensure that you read all of the terms and conditions of your contract and that you are satisfied with all arrangements. If you cancel your travel, you can expect to pay a substantial cancellation fee i.e. flight tickets are generally non-refundable.
