Call plans are schedules that describe how call rates are calculated. They also state the call charges for peak and off peak times. There are two types of call plans: a fixed term call plan and a pre-paid call plan.
Fixed Term
A fixed term call plan has many features, including:- a fixed contract term, usually between 12 and 24 months
- the cost of calls at various times (peak and off peak)
- the cost of monthly access. This charge ensures that you remain connected to the mobile phone network. Generally call plans with higher monthly access charges will have lower call rates.
A mobile phone contract is legally binding and is usually difficult and expensive to cancel before the full term has expired. Remember, once you have signed the contract, you are responsible for paying the bills, so make sure you understand all of the conditions (term of the agreement, cost of calls etc). If you are unsure, don't sign! Ask questions or seek independent advice.
Be aware that many mobile phone deals may involve two separate contracts - one with the service provider for call services and the other with a dealer for the supply of the handset. Make sure you know the names of both companies.
Remember, payment terms of contracts usually include a minimum monthly charge plus call costs. If you don't pay the monthly charge, the service provider may have the right to suspend the service whilst continuing to charge the monthly fee.
If you need a phone just for emergencies, think about buying a second-hand phone and connecting to a carrier with no monthly fees.
Be wary of special mobile phone deals that offer 'free' or 'cheap' phones. The actual cost of the handset is probably included in the monthly price of the service contract. Such deals often come with higher call charge rates.
Pre-paid
Buying a phone may be a better option for you because you own the phone and you can buy a pre-paid mobile phone card to a certain value, say $25 $30 or $50 (cards are now widely available at delicatessens, supermarkets, video stores and service stations). The phone provides you with a running tally of how much money is left on the card at the end of each call.Check if there is an expiry date on the credit. Consider if you are likely to use all the credit by then.
There is less variety in pre-paid call plans, most will simply state the cost of calls at various times of the day (peak and off peak). Compared to contract-linked call plans, pre-paid call plans will generally offer higher call rates, but they do not include monthly access fees.
