Consider the alternatives

There are other options that might be available to you. Think about these before you decide to take on more debt.

While you have probably worked hard for many years to own your home, will you want or be able to continue to maintain it? Would a smaller property or a fully maintained independent living unit be more suited to your needs?

If money is an issue, discuss your concerns with trusted family members who may be able to assist you financially or help you with other ideas.

Centrelink offer a Pension Loan Scheme for people who are ineligible for the pension under the income or asset test. This loan is similar to a reverse mortgage but with lower interest rates. However, you may not be able to borrow as much money as from other lenders.

If you need assistance with repairs or modifications to your home, you can contact the Stay At Home scheme. They can assist you to find skilled professional tradespeople and can even arrange for an assessment of your needs to make your home safer.
