If you wish to register a business name in South Australia or wish to search for details held on the Business Names Register you may conduct a Business Name Search.
You may check the register of names for existing or similar business names on the National Names Index.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your proposed business name does not infringe any Trade Mark. Check with IP Australia.
The final determination on the availability and suitability of the name you wish to register will be made by this Office once we have received your application. Remember: Do not incur any expense eg. printing of stationery until you receive your certificate of registration.
The Business Name Register contains the following details:
- full registered business name
- type of business
- date of commencement of the business name
- business address
- name and address of proprietor(s)
Methods for searching the business name register
- Check the National Names Index - this is a free service with access limited to the business name and registration number
- Complete a request in writing and lodge it (along with a fee) at the front counter at Level 3, Chesser House, 91-97 Grenfell St, Adelaide. Our business hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm.
If lodged at the front counter we will generate an extract for you (please allow approximately 15 minutes). - Complete a request in writing and lodge it (along with a fee) by mail addressed to
Consumer and Business Services, Licensing and Registration, GPO Box 1719, Adelaide SA 5001. Telephone us on 131 882 for a form. We will conduct the search and send you an extract from the Business Name Register. - Use an Information Broker - this provides full access to the Business Names Register. A fee is payable for the service.
