Internet domain names

.au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA) is an Australian not-for-profit company vested with the responsibility of operating the .au domain. auDA serves as the domain name registry for all Australia domain names.

To register a domain name an applicant must satisty the criteria applied by auDA, which may include proving that they are a commercail entity and an acceptable proof is a business name registration certificate. To register a domain name see one of the auDA registrars

The Federal Government has produced a business guide to registering a web address. The guide aims to assist business to register a web address and illustrates the relationship between a company name, business name, domain name and trademark. Visit their website for further information...

OCBA does not encourage the registration of domain names as business names unless the business is actually going to carry on business under the domain name. Additionally the applicant for the business name must prove that they have a right to the domain name in question. The proposed business name must then satisfy the current names determination test excluding the '.com.au' portion of the name or other relevant locator suffix. Notwithstanding the registration of the domain name and proof of the entitlement to use that domain name, the proposed business name may still be rejected.

A proposed domain name may not be registered as a business name if there is no bona fide business being conducted under that name. It is not possible to register a business name solely to secure a particular domain name registration.
In general terms a domain name may be considered as an address similar to a phone number or a street address or a location for certain information.

The Corporate Affairs Commission has an obligation under the Business Names Act to cancel the registration of a business name if there is reason to believe that the proprietor is not carrying on business in this State under the business name.

Cancellation of the business name may result in the cancellation of the domain name.
