How To Search For Your Natural Parent(s) Or Child
If you were adopted or had a child adopted at birth, it is now possible to search for your natural parent(s) or child. The Adoption Act, 1988 of South Australia gives an adopted person or a birth parent specific authority to apply for a copy of the original birth entry (before adoption). This does not apply to persons adopted in South Australia but born elsewhere.
Before any certificates from the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office can be released, authorisation must be obtained from the Adoption and Family Information Service.
The Adoption and Family Information Service will issue you an authorisation letter to use when applying for any certificates, as follows:
Adopted persons can apply for
- Their original birth certificate
- Birth certificate of the birth mother
- Change of name of either parent or
- Death certificate of either parent.
- Marriage of the birth mother (if paternity was not acknowledged at time of birth, or if paternity was acknowledged but the birth parents were not married)
Parents of adopted persons can apply for
- The adopted child's original birth certificate
- The child's post-adoptive birth certificate
- Change of name certificate of child or
- Death certificate of child.
All applications for searches for marriage, change of name or death entries must be lodged with a copy of the original birth certificate, which will be returned to you with the search results.
The birth father must be named on the pre-adoptive birth certificate for access to be permitted to him or to records relating to him.
