The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office is responsible for maintaining registers of births, deaths, marriages, changes of name, adoption of children and reassignments of sex that occur in South Australia. We also issue certificates certifying entries in the registers and conduct civil marriage ceremonies.
NEW LAWS TO RECOGNISE FEMALE SAME-SEX CO-PARENTS
In June 2011 South Australian laws were passed to recognise female, same-sex couples as the co-parents of babies. For births registered after 15 December 2011, the birth mother and co-parent can both be included on the birth registration and birth certificate in some cases. For births registered before 15 December 2011, the birth mother and co-parent can apply to change the birth record to add the female partner as a co-parent in some cases.
